Classroom Expectations
Welcome! I am excited for a great school year. I hope that you find this class to be challenging and enjoyable.
Materials
Textbook, folder or binder, red pen, pencil, and calculator (TI-30XIIS is recommended - I do have some in class, but you will have to leave these in class). I will let you know when we need to have crayons or markers or other creative utensils. Please bring these materials to class EVERY DAY!
Grading
Your math grade will be computed as follows:
Practice problems (homework) will be corrected in class the following class period, if at all. Occasionally the work will be collected and corrected by me.
In class projects: 10% of your total grade.
Watching the lesson videos and taking notes: 20%
Practice work: 20% of your total grade.
Assessments: 50% of your total grade.
Daily work is always due the following class period, unless stated otherwise.
Late work/redos are expected to be completed by the student. The grade they get the first day will remain in the grade book until the student turns in, or fixes, their homework.
No extra credit work will be given individually. It will be sporadic throughout the year and be available for everyone.
If you are going to be absent from class, you are expected to get the assignments before you leave otherwise it will be considered late.
When you have an unplanned absence, you will have one additional class period to complete the material that was assigned on the day you were absent.
Extra homework help & test make-ups can be done before school, after school, SRB or by appointment.
Commonly asked questions:
1. What does a day in my class look like?
We start each day with something I'm calling the "First Fifteen (FF)". This is 15 minutes to do some questions that cover yesterday's material. These FF's will be considered bonus points. If students earn 100%'s on all of the assignments, extra credit, and an ice cream coupon will be rewarded. These First Fifteen's can be redone, even multiple times if need be. These can be found in google classroom under the "Topic # First Fifteen" that links to our textbooks website.. After the FF we then play a math game called 24, work our way through notes, and then there is work time; usually 15 mins - 30 mins, to work on book work, a worksheet, or online practice.
2. Can projects be redone?
There will be times when I give the students a majority of the class period to work through a project. Generally, I will collect the project at the end of the class period. If the student did not use their time wisely (or appropriately) and receive a failing grade, they will be asked to make that up before of after school for a passing grade.
3. What about quizzes/tests?
These can also be redone for up to 1/2 credit back. There is a form to fill out (I have copies in class) that lead them through a mistake reflection process. Quizzes/tests can only be redone once.
